| Description |
I am dressed as a Japanese noblewoman of the 12th century (Kamakura period). I am wearing a simple day outfit of white kosode, red hakama and a green uwagi brocaded with a motif of pine needles. This is an appropriate ensemble for later summer/early fall. On my head I wear tsubozoshoku, a "bug hat". This veiled headdress not only works like portable mosquito netting, it protects me from the gaze of people of lower rank. My face is painted white and my black hair worn in a low ponytail as was the fashion. The clothes are 100% silk and handsewn and the bug hat is handwoven from willow reeds and the veil handsewn from silk guaze. |
